  • Stikine Wilderness Adventure

    with Casting Instruction

The Stikine River is a large, glacier-fed river that travels hundreds of miles back into Canada. We like to camp in a cabin close to the international boundary. We don't fish the actual river, but rather tributaries that are crystal clear and full of pink and chum salmon.

The concept is that learning to cast a fly is technical. Instruction is included. As guests become more proficient at casting, the fish will respond, and casting becomes fishing and fishing becomes catching.

Learn how to cast, hook, and fight fish that weigh between eight and twenty pounds. Try to identify cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden and present an egg imitation. Walk the banks of the tributaries and look for wildlife, marvel at the size of old-growth trees, take a dip in volcanic hot springs, and learn about the various birds and small mammals.

The accommodations are rustic: sleeping bags on air mattresses. The cabin has a heater to keep the chill off in the morning. Food is made on a camp stove or over a campfire.

Finish the trip in Wrangell with a one-day deep-sea fishing trip. Take home some frozen halibut! Four days of river fishing, five nights in a cabin, and the final day fishing conventional tackle in salt water. Those final two nights, you are in a bed at the Stikine Inn.

The price is $5,500 per angler. The last week in July and the first week in August are prime for this adventure. We prefer groups of four. We can provide waders, rods, and rain jackets at an additional cost.
